Often we hear the only thing constant is change. When we talk about a life transition, we are talking about the act of experiencing a significant change.

We know changes come in many forms. For example, some are good and lead to happiness. On the contrary, tragic accidents, divorce, or losing a loved one are often heavy life changes to overcome.

Difficult shifts in life can leave us feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed. Even a happier life transition like marriage, parenthood, or recovery can cause feelings of fear or uncertainty. As a result, any of these events can lead to anxiety or some resistance to embrace what lies ahead.

Let's talk about ways you might move toward a life transition while maintaining as much normalcy as possible.

What Is a Life Transition?

It's very normal to feel resistant to change, especially when facing a difficult life transition without warning.

A life transition is the act of change. These shifts in life can be difficult to adapt to. As a result, you might question your personal beliefs and values. Likewise, you may question your ability to handle what's ahead. You may be feeling fearful or have an urge to retreat.

Your feelings are valid and normal. The best way to adjust to a life transition is to avoid suppressing your emotions. After all, it's not a matter of when you'll adjust, rather how you adjust, that will have the greatest impact on your life.

What Are Life Changes We Face That Can Lead to a Life Transition?

Many events can lead to life transitions. Some examples include:

  • marriage
  • entering parenthood
  • graduating high school/college
  • starting a new job or changing careers
  • retiring
  • hitting an age milestone like 40 or 50
  • losing a job
  • divorce
  • moving
  • tragic accidents with life-altering consequences
  • loss of physical health
  • serious illness or death of a loved one

Just like grief has stages, there are stages of a life transition as well. As you move through each phase, you may experience a range of emotions, from self-doubt to anger and confusion and overwhelm. However, as you go through the cycle of change, you can come to a place of acknowledgment, acceptance, and hope for the future.

As you face the unknown, one thing you can do is acknowledge whatever you're feeling. So, take some time to meditate. As you exhale your negative emotions, breathe in hope. Another suggestion is to write your thoughts and feelings in a journal. As a result, you're able to both express and acknowledge your emotions. Finally, remember self-care can be crucial during this time of need.

However, if you find yourself wanting to numb your emotions or stuck in a place of sadness, there is help. At Thrive Counseling Atlanta, we're able to guide you through a life transition. As you move into this new chapter of life, we can help you maintain your ability to function. We're here to help you move forward with hope.
